The Home and School Association (HSA), Stanhope’s parent-teacher organization, has been in existence in the Stanhope School system for over 30 -years. Parents, teachers and administrators may support the association through a yearly membership fee. Business is conducted and decisions are made by an Executive Committee of elected officers and volunteer parents who agree to work on the various committees that are formed each year. The group encourages and solicits input from all parents who wish to become actively involved in this organization. The goal of the Home and School Association is to benefit the children of Stanhope by enhancing and supplementing the educational process and by improving communication between parents, teachers and administrators.
The group serves as a liaison between the home and the school in the following ways:
v Holds meetings each month, including an Annual Open House during which time parents are encouraged to meet their child’s teachers, visit classrooms, and learn about the curriculum proposed for that year. Sponsors various events such as the Spelling Bee and the Introduction of Board Candidates.
v Sponsors annual programs and assemblies, such as a fall and spring Book Fair, a Holiday Boutique and a Mother’s Day flower sale.
v Keeps parents informed of activities and special events, as well as regulations and procedures, through its newsletter, “News and Notes.”
v Organizes fundraisers each year to accumulate the moneys necessary to fund the awards and grants it provides for the teachers and students. Other yearly expenditures include publishing of the school calendar, graduation awards, sponsorships of the eighth grade dinner dance and the first grade Thanksgiving Feast.
v Supplements the funding provided to teachers through grants for specific purchases (some past examples include a new laminating machine, a new stage curtain, contributions toward new playground equipment, basketball uniforms, new sound system and new choral risers) or through its Classroom Education Fund, which gives direct grants to each teacher. In addition, its annual Campbell’s Soup label contest helps to supplement the school’s supply of audio/visual equipment.
